The Kennel Club is responsible for the approval of Championship Show Judges, of which there are in excess of 10,000 approved in the UK.
The Judges Sub-Committee (JSC) processes some 300 appointments for judges every six weeks to award Challenge Certificates (CCs) at championship Shows. Each first time CC appointment is subject to an evaluation, the results of which are also considered by the JSC, as are applications for inclusion on a breed club’s A2 judges list.
The Kennel Club liaises with overseas Kennel Clubs with regard to the eligibility of UK judges to judge abroad and in considering overseas judges’ nominations to judge to CC level in Britain. It also compiles the Directory of Championship Show Judges, which is available to purchase from their Online Shop. The Guide for Judges (All Activities) which includes a guide for Ring Stewards is also available to purchase from their Online Shop.
Great Dane Breed Council Judges List Criteria
1. A1 LIST
For persons who have previously been approved by the Kennel Club to award CC’s in the breed and have completed their first appointment .To have the support of The Great Dane Breed Council. (KC Policy)
2. A2 LIST
For persons who fulfil all the requirements for the A3 List and who have been assessed in accordance with The Kennel Club requirements and accepted by The Kennel Club for inclusion on an A2 List and have the support of The Great Dane Breed Council. (KC Policy)
3. A3 LIST (Breed Specialists)
Requirements include:-
(1) Minimum of 7 years judging experience in the breed and have the support of The Great Dane Breed Council. (KC Policy)
(2) To have judged at 2 Breed Clubs at Open Show/ Limited Show level (excluding Stakes/Special Awards Classes) one of which must have been an Open Show
(3) To have judged a minimum of 60 classes in this breed
(4) To have judged a minimum of 200 dogs in this breed. (KC Policy – number optional)
(5) To have attended a seminar given by a Kennel Club Accredited Trainer and passed the relevant examination on Kennel Club Regulations and Judging Procedures. (KC Policy as of 1.7.2001)
(6) To have attended a seminar given by a Kennel Club Accredited Trainer on Conformation and Movement. (KC Policy as of 1.7.2001)
(a) To have attended a Conformation and “Hands on Assessment” conducted by a Kennel Club Accredited Trainer and passed the assessment. (KC Policy as of 1.7.2001)
(7) To have attended at least one Breed Specific seminar run in accordance with the relevant Kennel Club Code of Best Practice and passed an examination and/or assessment where applicable. (KC Policy as of 1.7.2001)
(8) To have bred and/or owned a minimum of 3 dogs when they obtained their 1st entry in the Kennel Club Stud Book (save in exceptional circumstances). (KC Policy)
(9) To have stewarded at 12 shows. (KC Policy)
3(a) A3 List (Non Specialists)
Requirements include:-
(1) Minimum of 7 years judging experience in any one breed (to include 5 years in this breed) and have the support of The Great Dane Breed Council. (KC Policy)
(2) To have judged for 2 Breed Clubs at Open Show level (excluding Stakes/Special Award Classes).
(3) To have judged a minimum of 60 classes in this breed
(4) To have judged a minimum of 200 dogs in this breed. (KC Policy – Number optional by Club)
(5) To have awarded CC’s in at least one other breed. (KC Policy)
(6) To Have Attended at least one breed specific judging seminar run in accordance with the relevant Kennel Club code of Best Practice and passed an examination and all other requirements of The Kennel Club.
(7) To have bred and/or owned a minimum of 3 dogs of any breed when they obtained their 1st entry in The Kennel Club Stud Book (save in exceptional circumstances)
4. B List (Breed Specialists)
(1) To have 7 years experience owning and exhibiting in this breed and to have the support of The Great Dane Breed Council.
(2) To have judged 20 classes in this breed at Open Shows or Championship Shows without CC’s.
(3) To have judged 60 dogs of this breed.
(4) To have attended at least one appropriate breed specific judging seminar and passed an assessment where applicable.
4. (a) B List (Non – Specialists)
(1) Minimum of 7 years judging experience in any one breed and have the support of The Great Dane Breed Council.
(2) To have judged 20 classes of this breed at Open Shows or Championship Shows without CC’s (save in exceptional circumstances).
(3) To have judged 60 dogs of this breed.
(4) To have attended an advanced Breed Seminar for this breed run in accordance with the Kennel Club Code of Best Practice and passed an examination and/or assessment where applicable.
5. C List (Breed Specialist)
For aspirant judges who have been active in the breed for a minimum of 5 years and have the support of The Great Dane Breed Council.
5(a) C List (Non – Specialist)
For aspirant judges who have shown an interest in the breed and have the support of The Great Dane Breed Council.
